PURPOSE
Help you understand the difference between email aliases and domain aliases in KloudEmail and how you can use each one with your existing KloudEmail service.
PREREQUISITES
- You already have at least one active KloudEmail mailbox with KartHost (KloudEmail Basic or KloudEmail Suite).
- You know the main email address you are using today, for example, you@yourbusiness.com.
- Optional: You own one or more additional domain names, for example, yourbusiness.net or yourbusiness.org, and would like them to work with your KloudEmail.
EMAIL ALIASES
An email alias is an extra email address that points to an existing KloudEmail mailbox. It does not create a new mailbox, login, or inbox of its own. It simply delivers into a mailbox you already have.
Example:
- Main mailbox: jane@yourbusiness.com
- Email alias: sales@yourbusiness.com → delivers into jane@yourbusiness.com
Anyone who emails sales@yourbusiness.com will have their message arrive in Jane's existing inbox.
Key points about email aliases:
- No extra mailbox: The alias shares the same mailbox as your main address.
- Same inbox: Messages sent to the alias arrive in the same inbox as your main email address.
- Great for roles or departments: You can use aliases like info@, sales@, or support@ and have them delivered to one or more people.
- Available with KloudEmail Basic and KloudEmail Suite: Aliases are a feature of the KloudEmail platform.
HOW TO SET UP AN EMAIL ALIAS
You or your team can set up email aliases for your KloudEmail mailbox using the KartHost Customer Center. The step-by-step instructions are available in this Knowledgebase article:
This article focuses on explaining what aliases are and how they work. Use the linked how-to article above when you are ready to create or change your aliases.
DOMAIN ALIASES
A domain alias is when you add an extra domain name to work with your existing KloudEmail mailboxes. Instead of creating a completely separate email system for the new domain, KloudEmail treats it as another face for the same mailboxes.
Example:
- Primary KloudEmail domain: yourbusiness.com
- Extra domain alias: yourbusiness.net
- jane@yourbusiness.net → delivered into the same jane@yourbusiness.com mailbox
Key points about domain aliases:
- Same mailboxes, more domains: You do not get new mailboxes. The same people and mailboxes receive mail for the extra domain.
- Easy branding: You can accept email at multiple domains, such as .com, .net, and .org, without managing separate accounts.
- Requires proper DNS: The alias domain must be correctly pointed with DNS and MX records so it can receive email through KloudEmail.
- Applies to KloudEmail Basic and KloudEmail Suite: Domain aliasing is tied to your KloudEmail service, not to web hosting.
HOW TO REQUEST A DOMAIN ALIAS
Domain aliases are not created directly by you in the Customer Center or KloudEmail Control Panel. To add a domain alias to your KloudEmail account, submit a support request to KartHost.
Basic process:
- Make sure you already own the additional domain name you want to use.
- Open a ticket with KartHost Support from your KartHost Customer Center account.
- In your ticket, provide the primary KloudEmail domain and the new domain you want to use as a domain alias.
- KartHost will set up the domain alias on the KloudEmail side and provide any DNS records needed for that domain.
- You or your DNS provider will add or update the DNS records for the alias domain so that email for that domain is delivered to KloudEmail.
For more details, see:
Once this is complete, addresses like jane@yourbusiness.net will deliver into the same mailbox as jane@yourbusiness.com instead of creating a second, separate account.
HOW THEY WORK TOGETHER
You can use email aliases and domain aliases at the same time.
Example:
- Main mailbox: jane@yourbusiness.com
- Email aliases on the same domain: sales@yourbusiness.com, info@yourbusiness.com
- Domain alias: yourbusiness.net
- Additional addresses: jane@yourbusiness.net, sales@yourbusiness.net, info@yourbusiness.net
All of the above addresses deliver into the same KloudEmail mailboxes you already use, as long as they have been set up for your account.
EXPECTED RESULT
When everything is set up correctly, email sent to your email alias or domain alias arrives in the same inbox as your main email address, and you do not see a separate mailbox.
If messages sent to an alias are bouncing or not arriving, contact KartHost Support so the KloudEmail
