ICANN 2025 Rule Changes
What You Need to Know

(To ensure our support team remains available for urgent needs, we’re unable to assist with requests to look up or provide registrant/owner contact details. Please do not open tickets for these requests, as this may overload our support queue. See the steps below on how to view Registrant in each domain name.)

Effective August 21, 2025, ICANN will implement significant changes to its Registration Data Policy (RDP) for all generic top-level domains (gTLDs). These changes affect how contact information is collected, stored, and displayed for domain registrations. Here’s what KartHost customers should know:

What’s Changing?

  • Minimal Data Collection: Registrars will only be required to collect and retain contact details for the Registrant (the domain owner) by default.

  • Other Contacts Eliminated: Administrative, Billing, and Technical contact info is no longer required for most gTLDs, unless specifically mandated by the registry of a given TLD.

  • WHOIS Output: Only Registrant information will appear in public WHOIS results by default. Other contact types will not be displayed or retained unless a specific TLD’s policy requires it.

  • Legacy Data Removal: Registrars will permanently delete any previously held Admin, Billing, or Technical contact information unless needed for certain TLDs. Customers who need to retain these must store them separately.

  • Exceptions: Some unique TLDs (like .asia) may have additional requirements; this will be handled case-by-case depending on registry contracts.

  • The Organization (Company Name) Field: The value entered in the Registrant Organization (Company Name) field will now legally define the domain owner. If you list a company in this field, the company—not you as an individual—will be the official owner of the domain.

What Does This Mean for KartHost Customers?

  • All New Registrations and Transfers: Only Registrant (domain owner—person OR company) details are required and stored for most domains.

  • No Public Access to Other Contacts: Admin, Billing, and Technical contact data will not be shown in WHOIS or kept in the registrar’s systems, unless required for your specific TLD.

  • Historical Data: If you have previously stored Admin, Billing, or Technical contact info with your domain, that data will be purged unless a registry requests otherwise.

  • If You Need More Contacts: You will be responsible for keeping any Admin, Billing, or Technical contacts for your organization outside of the standard registrar system going forward.

  • Organization Field Ownership: If a business name is entered in the Organization (Company Name) field, that entity is the legal owner. Leave it blank for personal ownership, or ensure accuracy for business domains.
