How to Update your Domain Names' MX Record for Email Services Not with KartHost

If you manage your domain’s DNS using the free DNS service provided by KartHost with your domain registration, you can update your MX records to direct email to your chosen email service provider. Your email service does not need to be with the same provider as your website hosting1.

Steps to Update MX Records:

  1. Log in to your KartHost Customer Center account.

  2. Navigate to Domains > My Domains from the drop-down menu.

  3. Select the domain you wish to update. Under the Status column (on the right side), click the Active button.

  4. Scroll down to the DNS Management vertical menu (do not use the 'DNS Management' link in the 'Manage' menu). Click Manage MX Records.

  5. On the Manage MX Records page, click Add a New MX Record.

    • If you use Google Apps, you can click Create Google Apps MX Records (verify the entries are correct for your service).

  6. In the Hostname field, enter "@" (which stands for the root domain) unless your email provider specifies otherwise.

  7. Enter the required value from your email service provider in the Full MX Name field (e.g., for KloudEmail: "mx1.emailsrvr.com").

  8. For TTL (Time to Live), enter 7200 seconds (2 hours), unless otherwise instructed.

  9. In the PRI (Priority) field, use the priority recommended by your email service (for KloudEmail, use 10 for "mx1.emailsrvr.com").

  10. Click Add Record.

    • If your provider requires multiple MX records, repeat the above steps for each record.

Important Tips:

  • Add an SPF Record as provided by your email service to improve email deliverability.

  • If supported, also add DKIM and DMARC records to protect your domain’s reputation and prevent email spoofing.

  • Always refer to your email service provider’s documentation for the correct values.

Field Explanations:

  • Hostname: Usually "@", but check your provider’s instructions.

  • Full MX Name: The target mail server provided by your email service.

  • TTL: Time to Live, in seconds. Recommended: 7200 (minimum accepted).

  • PRI: Priority; lower numbers have higher priority. If unsure, use "10".
