Here are the step-by-step instructions for setting a new or existing WordPress post or page from Public to Private:

Setting a New Post or Page to Private

  1. In the WordPress admin dashboard, go to either Posts or Pages > Add New Post or Page or All Post or All Pages > Add New button to create a new post or page.
  2. In the post/page editor, locate the "Visibility" option in the right-hand sidebar. By default, it will be set to "Public".
  3. Click on the "Edit" link next to "Visibility".
  4. In the popup, select the "Private" radio button. (Alternatively, you can select Password to assign a password for that page or post)
  5. Click the "OK" button to confirm.
  6. Publish or update the post/page as usual.

Setting an Existing Post or Page to Private

  1. In the WordPress admin dashboard, go to either Posts or Pages > All Posts or All Pages > All Pages.
  2. Locate the post or page you want to make private (or password protected) and hover over the title.
  3. Click the "Edit" link that appears.
  4. In the post/page editor, locate the "Visibility" option in the right-hand sidebar. It will be set to "Public" by default.
  5. Click on the "Edit" link next to "Visibility".
  6. In the popup, select the "Private" or "Password" radio button. (if Password, you will need to assign a password to give to anyone wishing to access the page)
  7. Click the "OK" button to confirm.
  8. Update the post/page to save the changes.

After following these steps, the post or page will now be set to "Private" ( or Password) and will only be visible to users with the appropriate permissions (Administrators and Editors by default). Regular visitors to your site will not be able to access the private content. And if Password was selected anyone with your assigned password.
